What happens when the roles between parents and children shift— when those who were cared for become the carers? Does it matter if the parents were never great at parenting—or even caused harm?

For 419 years, King Lear has stirred pity for its fallen men—Lear, Gloucester, Edgar — who claim the moral high ground. Audiences have sided with them.

We say enough is enough. It’s time to turn the tables. To question who holds power. To set the record straight.

LEAR DETHRONED is a work-in-progress presentation of what Sasswagen think is worth pursuing in the KING LEAR story. With music, original text, re-worked scenes and audience discussion – this will be a fascinating night of Shakespeare like no other. Join us, drink in hand, for performance, discussion and more.
